Expert’s Guide to French Press Brewing

Introduction


The French Press method, also known as “Press Pot,” is a simple and very effective method of brewing a great cup of coffee. In this method of brewing, the water and coffee sit together within a closed vessel, permitting the extraction to take place throughout the entire brewing process. Because the dwell time is considerably longer (3-4 minutes), a coarser grind is recommended.


Method

YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING:
  1. PRE-MEASURED COFFEE BEANS
    55 g PER LITRE OF WATER
  2. FRENCH PRESS
  3. WATER KETTLE
  4. SPOON
  5. GRINDER
  6. TIMER
STEP 1
PREHEAT YOUR FRENCH PRESS WITH CLEAN, HOT WATER.
STEP 2
GRIND YOUR COFFEE. IT SHOULD RESEMBLE COARSELY GROUND BLACK PEPPER FLAKES.
STEP 3
EMPTY YOUR FRENCH PRESS. ADD YOUR COFFEE GROUNDS. START YOUR TIMER.
STEP 4
ADD HOT WATER TO THE FRENCH PRESS. FILL ONLY HALF-WAY FULL.
STEP 5
USE THE SPOON AND STIR THE COFFEE GROUNDS 3 TIMES.
STEP 6
FILL HOT WATER TO THE TOP OF THE FRENCH PRESS, STOPPING JUST BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE SPOUT.
STEP 7
CAREFULLY PLACE THE LID ON TOP OF THE FRENCH PRESS. DO NOT PLUNGE THE FILTER ASSEMBLY DOWN YET.
STEP 8
WHEN 4 MINUTES HAVE PASSED ON THE TIMER, CAFEULLY PLUNGE THE FILTER ASSEMBLY DOWN. IT SHOULD TAKE BETWEEN 15-20 SECONDS TO PLUNGE COMPLETELY.
CLEANING STEP 1
CAREFULLY REMOVE THE TOP FILTER ASSEMBLY. USE A SPOON TO REMOVE AS MANY COFFEE GRINDS AS YOU CAN FROM THE GLASS BEAKER. WASH WITH WARM WATER AND MILD DETERGENT. RINSE THOROUGHLY WITH WATER.
CLEANING STEP 2
CAREFULLY REMOVE THE FILTERS AND CLEAN IN MILD DETERGENT, ALONG WITH THE LID. RINSE THOROUGHLY AND RE-ASSEMBLE.
